With April being National Recycling Month, we want to recognize William Rittenhouse America's father of recycling as an old style BAO Bad Ass Legend. William founded the first paper mill to use recycled materials in 1690 near the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with all of the mill's fiber for hand papermaking being obtained from discarded rags and cotton. William knew recycling was good for business, good for customers and good for the environment.  That is bad ass.

Thank you to Gene Baur for spending 25 years fighting for the ethical treatment of farm animals.  A true BAO Bad Ass Legend, Gene co-founded the Farm Sanctuary which works to protect farm animals from cruelty, inspire change in the way society views and treats farm animals, and promote compassionate vegan living.  While vegans are definitely bad ass, please remember you don’t have to be a vegetarian to want to fight for the rights of farm animals.  You can visit the New York Shelter in Watkins Glen, New York, "175-acre New York farm is set amidst rolling green hills and forests in the Finger Lakes Region of upstate New York."

Fresh off a fantastic day at the New York City Vegetarian Food Festival we are so jazzed for our next Tasting Brooklyn event happening this Tuesday.   To show our love for Brooklyn, BAO is an Event Program Sponsor and BAO FRESH KOMBUCHA will be served along with culinary treats from over twenty-five food and drink vendors representing the diverse culture of Brooklyn.  The event is being put on by Brooklyn Exposed - – Your Guide to Everything Brooklyn!

Brooklyn Exposed was created to keep Brooklyn residents and visitors informed of this lovely borough’s arts and entertainment, cultural and social scene activities. Gone are the days where you read snippets of stories about Brooklyn which only focus on popular neighborhoods such as Dumbo, Park Slope, Williamsburg and Brooklyn Heights.

Brought to you from a Brooklynite’s perspective, we at Brooklyn Exposed love Brooklyn and the people who call this city their home. As such, we strive to break the misconception that Brooklyn lacks a vast array of events, restaurants, and community by offering extensive business and event listings and entertaining articles about our community. People deserve to know that just over the bridge, the entire borough of Brooklyn has some of the most interesting and down to earth happenins’ of all the boroughs.  Join in!

Brooklyn Exposed is your one-stop source for:

  • Brooklyn restaurant reviews
  • Where to plan a romantic date
  • Where to enjoy karaoke on a Wednesday night
  • Which restaurants offer great food and service, or lack thereof
  • Where to find the best Spring sandals
  • Which restaurants offer Thai cuisine
  • Where to shop to make your home look like a magazine spread
  • How to enjoy Brooklyn in 2, 3 or 7 days
  • Where to go with a group on a Saturday night
  • And so much more!

We are proud to be at Wild by Nature in Eastern Long Island and were lucky enough to get an article written by the NY Healthy Food Examiner.  It is going to be a great summer when we can grab our BAO FRESH KOMBUCHA on the way to the Hamptons.

Many bad ass legends are made when the average person must face real adversity. The remaining workers at the Fukushima Nuclear Plant in Japan have put aside their own interests for the interests of their neighbors.  The grateful and anxious nation of Japan looks on as these workers struggle to avert disaster.  Good luck and best wishes to these bad ass legends.

In celebration of International Women's Day on March 8th, 2011 and the badassness of women everywhere, we are excited to recognize Gloria Steinem as a BAO Bad Ass Legend. She has never wearied in her fight to breakdown stereotypes and for forty years her efforts have been the cornerstone of the women’s movement. If that isn’t enough, as a writer, editor, and lecturer, she coined many a bad ass phrase like, “a woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle.”

Imagine taking a stance against conventional thinking in the world’s of science and technology and pioneering a movement whose principles are still thought revolutionary fifty years later.  That is what Sir Albert Howard did.  Considered the founder of the organic farming movement, Sir Albert is a true BAO Bad Ass Legend.

Recycling is bad ass.  Working everyday to improve recycling in schools is the stuff of a BAO Bad Ass Legend.  Robbie Lock is running New York City’s Public Schools Recycling Champions Program, working to establish model recycling programs at our public schools.  Very cool.  We hope you make a big difference.
